The Dark of the Covenant

Here’s a neat video retelling — in 4½ minutes — the story of the Jews’ Exodus from Egypt, performed by the Attraction Black-Light and Shadow Theatre group, forwarded to me by my mother.

Silhouettes of people depicting a palm tree and Egyptian figure holding an infant with basket at feet

I kinda feel like the klezmer rendition of “Oseh Shalom Bimromav” that accompanies the mimed, silhouetted, trompe l’oeil narrative is a little too Dixieland peppy for the gravity of most of what’s depicted. And you probably have to be familiar with the story to follow what’s going on. But there’s no denying how imaginative and technically impressive this is.

My favorite moment is the burning bush.

  1. I have a feeling that Jewish moms are forwarding this around. The group, or some version of it, was on America's Got Talent and was just about the only thing that interested me when I caught a glimpse, although I can't stomach that show for long.
