Radical White

A big old house surrounded by tall, bare trees, all blanketed in fresh white snow, mounds of which are in foreground

Here’s my mom’s house as it looked this afternoon. See that shovel at bottom right
of the photo? The heap covered in snow between it and the tree is my car; behind that
is my grandparents’ car, which never got dug out from last weekend’s storm.

I-76 was closed, as were the Blue Route and the Schuylkill, which won’t mean much unless you used to live ’round here.

We actually got thunder during the blizzard, like the wind and snow weren’t enough. The local news, of course, is having a field day because they can justifiably hype this as historic — official tallies at the Philadelphia airport are 70+" of snow this season, 42.5" in the past five days. On the network and cable news, there appears to be a showdown of the would-be-clever headlines between “Snowmaggedon” and “Snowpocalypse”;
both sound too negative to me, so I’m going with “Snowffleupagus”.

  3. Cute house! You Pennsylvanians are such babies though, really. Oooh! 42 inches in five days - we are winter warriors! Bah! Up here - it's too Goddamn cold to snow most of the time and yet you see babies and old people out for brisk walks. Shame on you. Shame!

  4. Thanks, Stefan! You too, LK... And Joan: I'd say "bite me" but you probably would.

  5. Ha, I'm with you Joan. We Minnesotans have been watching with wry amusement the last couple weeks as the rest of the country deals with what we call "winter", and you Canadians put even us to shame.

Oh, and Blam, one of our local radio stations likes to use "Snownami" when the weathermen start to get all excited about an approaching storm. I've always liked that one, though Snowffleupagus is a contender.

    Yeah, for babies.

  9. By the way, I'm watching the opening ceremonies of the Olympics and none of your fellow Canadians seem to be zombies*.
    *okay, Celine Dion

Yeah, it's Canada! What do you think, we have thermometers?

That Celine...and her weird Magic Genie of a husband.

  11. Haha. An entire post about weather! :)

Thanks goodness there hasn't been quite that much snow here where I am, but last year—we looked just like that, and got inundated with words such as "snowmaggedon," snowpocolyps," and even…"weather-bomb."

Also, Celine is Canada's favourite crazy-face-arm-waving-while-singing-her-little-heart-out French Canadian Diva. She scares me. A lot:)

  12. Geez, Blam. You write all these brilliant reviews of movies and comics, but to get more than a few comments you apparently have to post a picture of snow (granted, it's Snowffleupagus). Although I have to imagine that Celine Dion is a conversation-killer.

  13. ...Celine Dion is a conversation-killer.

    Only in America;)

My husband had to go to California for work (or so he says) once and one of the selling points of the trip from his Francophone boss was "Hey, and if you have the extra time - you could go to Celine show!"

Ah, yes we were all in a twitter when she was performing in Vegas. A twitter, I tell you!

  14. You can have her back, Joan. Really.

  15. HA-HA! Vancouver doesn't have enough snow!

  16. You! Well - we are tirelessly gathering hay bales to lay down and then cover with snow. Tirelessly! Please ignore the wonky Olympic flame thing during the opening ceremonies too.
Apparently Pennsylvania didn't get the memo that it is bad karma to pick on Canada?

  17. Snowffleupagus... This is my new favorite word.

And I didn't realize you could use babies as thermometers. This is important information to know, for when I one day have babies.

You can if you're Joan. I hear she runs down to the neonatal ward the moment she gets the chills just so she can stick a preemie under her tongue.

    VW: bunberse

An acceptable replacement for "boil". I believe you call it a synonym.

"Hey guys, check out my sweet bunberse! First in line gets to lance it!"

We really should take this on the road.
