Make Like a Tree

Groot might have been the breakout star of this past summer. I suppose to a broader extent he’s one half of it — er, them — as part of a tandem with his pal Rocket. Or perhaps the honor goes to the entire headlining quintet of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Death and the Maidens

The other night I got the chance to see the 1977 Japanese film ハウス (Hausu),
alias House.

Poster with silhouette of tall oddly shaped house with either tree branches or hands sprouting from it against red sky and full moon

I’m not sure what I can tell you about it of import that the insane trailer doesn’t —
save to verify that while House does have at least the framework of a story it lives up to the trailer’s wildly abrupt shifts in scene and tone. Even if you don’t think you’ll ever watch the film, I urge you to click through the link for its distillation of sublime weirdness into 1¾ minutes.

The Doodles Abide

Google’s logo of the day is a weird one. I wish you luck clicking on it to find out what it represents...

'Google' spelled out in letters composed of discrete circles of varying sizes that get slightly darker and lighter with a kind of watercolor look

There have been a few articles speculating on its meaning, but I suspect we won’t hear anything from official sources for a while yet.
