  1. And that's probably the only time that anything New Universe will be mentioned or seen on this blog.

    Whew! : )

Nice gallery... I haven't seen most of those covers in, well, about 25 years (if at all, for some of them). The juxtaposition that simple alphabetical order gives them makes for some absolute hilarity, like the way Cloak seems to be sneering over at that pink Care Bear or the way Heathcliff actually looks more PO'd than the kind-of lame Hulk next to him. I also love how happy that Ewok is to be hoisting its crystal-pointed spear. And Magik (I had to look it up; my guess was Magma, despite the lack of curly hair) on the New Mutants looks like Uma Thurman, which could either be a swipe or just a funny by-product of BWS's style.

Your favorites are pretty much mine, especially that Lightle Spider-Man and the great Black Knight shot, although I'm surprised at how nice the Dave Ross Alpha Flight cover is. The Romita/Wiacek X-Men Wolverine is pretty nice, too. I think that the Classic X-Men Storm cover either needs to be color-corrected or was color-corrected too far, if you don't mind me saying.

VW: colvisms — The wit and wisdom of singer/songwriter Shawn Colvin, natch.

  2. What's up with Star Brand's pageboy haircut on that Marvel Age cover, anyway? "It's Prince Valiant... and he's blond... and he's in space!" You really gotta get something new up soon (I know, I know) so I'm not looking at that thing every time I call up your blog.

  3. I'd like to think that I've added some value not only through my commentary but by singling out the celebratory issues and the New Universe debuts as well as cropping, centering, and generally spiffing up the images where necessary.

Mission accomplished! The link to Mike's site all end up on his (new) front page now, by the way.

  4. Others of you might be wondering why anybody would notice that, which is probably healthy.

    Ha!

    Mission accomplished indeed!

I've always been partial to the Alpha Flight, Avengers, GI Joe and X-Men covers (X-Men is the one I'd call the most iconic of this bunch, though that may just be my affinity for the title in general showing).

I like the spirit behind it, but not the execution, of the West Coast Avengers cover, and I've always been confused by the Transformers cover, even as someone familiar with the property. It's Megatron, I think, but why wouldn't you go with Optimus Prime, the clear cut most recognizable character?

@Arben: And Magik ... on the New Mutants looks like Uma Thurman

    She totally does!
